Always plan ahead

Good advice whatever it is you are doing and it is certainly true for storage. If possible contact us at least 7 days in advance so we can reserve your unit and prepare you paperwork. Organise and purchase all of your packing materials and arrange suitable transportation. Plan how you will fill and utilise your container, after all you don’t want items that will be needed to be hidden away and unreachable.

Extra Tip: If possible try to remember to label or write on your storage boxes with simple things like ‘wine glasses’ or ‘computer games’ and keep an inventory of your stored items so you know if the item you are looking for is actually in your storage unit.

Packing up

Of course, how you pack your container will depend on what you are storing however for our domestic customers storing household goods we recommend that;

LARGE ITEMS

Disassembled if at all possible with all fixings kept in a labelled bag and attached to the item

BOX IT

Box everything that you can to help avoid losing things and for ease of stacking

QUALITY

Use quality storage boxes that wont collapse

HEAVY ITEMS

Spread heavy items evenly so boxes aren't too heavy

FRAGILE ITEMS

Wrap china and glass piece by piece. Put the heaviest items at the bottom and pad out corners and empty spaces

LABEL YOUR BOXES

Label your boxes clearly and preferably on the top and on one side. Ideally make a list of numbered boxes

CLEAN OUT

Clean out fridges, freezers, ovens and food cupboards, making sure all white goods are clean and dry and leave doors slightly open to avoid condensation and unwanted odours

At the container

As mentioned previously planning ahead and considering what you may need access to is essential. Once you have done that and are ready to fill your container make sure to consider the following:

LARGE ITEMS

Store large items first

USE ALL THE SPACE

Fill hollow items such as wardrobes with boxes

MATTRESSES

If mattresses are in a cover make sure that at least one end is open so that they can breathe. All used mattresses retain a small amount of moisture and if sealed this can lead to mould forming

HEAVY BOXES

Always ensure heavy boxes are at the bottom of a stack to avoid damage

PLANTS

Do not store plants as the moisture in the soil can cause mould to form even with good ventilation

LABEL YOUR BOXES

Label and number all boxes – keep a numbered list, and stack boxes with labels visible

CLEAN OUT

Store appliances clean, with doors wedged open. If you have space try and leave access space down the middle

Extra Tip: We recommend that you put a large bowl of salt in the corner of your container. This will ensure that any moisture is absorbed.
